Noted Dominican Merengue singer Rubby Pérez has passed away at the age of 69. Fans have taken over social media to pay their respects to the “El Africano” hitmaker.

Rubby Pérez passes away at 69, claims report

Rubby Pérez’s death at the age of 69 was confirmed by his manager Enrique Paulino to Rolling Stone.

The manager told the outlet that Pérez passed away after getting caught in rubble when the roof of the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, collapsed. The incident happened on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, and atleast 98 people lost their lives, with 160 injured (via AP News). The singer was performing at the club when the incident took place.

Before the confirmation of Pérez’s death arrived, he was believed to be alive based on the statements given by his daughter Zulinka Pérez to a local news channel, Noticias Telemicro. On Tuesday morning, she told the outlet, “He’s inside and we hope to God that he recovers soon. He’s injured, but he’s inside; they found him singing. He started singing so they could hear him.”

His daughter also confirmed that the bass player was serious and in hospital, while one of a saxohphonist passed away (via Billboard).

Although there were reports that Pérez was found by the police authorities and rushed to the hospital, his brother dismissed them. He told SIN News, “At the moment, he has not been rescued from the rubble. He hasn’t been sent to any hospital.”

He further shared, “Given the time the event occurred, which has already been 14 hours…only God’s grace can truly perform a miracle. Rubby is still in the rubble; we haven’t been able to rescue him. We hope he’s alive. We’re sharing this news as a family and I want it to be the right one.”
