On Friday, Mark Carney was sworn in as Prime Minister of Canada. He replaced Justin Trudeau after winning a landslide victory in the leadership election for the Liberal Party of Canada. He officially became the new Prime Minister at a ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa.

Harvard– and Oxford-educated, Carney has never held political office before. His experience includes being the heads of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, respectively. Carney was born in the Northwest Territories and holds citizenship from the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.

Carney unveiled a slimmed-down cabinet of 24 members, less than the 39 members of Trudeau’s cabinet. A number of ministers are being kept in place. Returning ministers include Chrystia Freeland, Anita Anand and Mélanie Joly. New ministers include Kody Blois, Ali Ehsassi and Arielle Kayabaga. Some ministers who served under Trudeau were removed from the cabinet include Mark Holland, Diane Lebouthillier and Ruby Sahota. Carney said, “[w]e have new ministers with new ideas, ready to respond to new threats and seize new opportunities.”

Carney has been sworn in amid the trade war with the United States. He vowed Canada will never be that nation’s 51st state. Carney also pledged that tariffs would be maintained “until the Americans show us respect … and [make] credible and reliable commitments to free and fair trade.” Carney is now expected to call a snap election.
