A Wicked live musical performance is set to arrive on NBC later this year, with stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo set to perform songs from the hit musical and film.
What do we know about the Wicked live musical special?
According to a report from Variety, the special event is set to take place ahead of the November 21, 2025 premiere of Wicked: For Good, the sequel to last year’s Wicked. The event will take place at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, and will be broadcast live on NBC before moving to Peacock the next day.
The TV special will also feature both Grande and Erivo, who play Galinda Upland and Elphaba Thropp, respectively, appearing and singing songs from the musical. Other castmates from the film will also appear, although it’s unclear which, or whether or not they will be performing any other content from the Wicked musical.
Other “surprise guests” were also teased by Jon M. Chu, who directed both Wicked films, when he announced the news during a presentation for NBCUniversal this week.
“I am absolutely delighted to let you in on a centerpiece of our campaign for the second film, and it’s something that’s never been done in the 22-year history of ‘Wicked,’” Chu said. “This fall, our stars, the wonderful Cynthia Erivo and incandescent Ariana Grande, will be joined by their castmates and some wonderful surprise guests in a one time only event from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, they will perform live many of the songs from the first movie — and maybe a little bit from the second one as well, for a night of entertainment that we think will be, as they say in Oz, thrillifying.”
Wicked was directed by Jon M. Chu from a screenplay written by the musical’s book writer Winnie Holzman. It is based on Maguire’s bestselling novel and the Tony-winning stage musical.
The ensemble cast was led by Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, who play Galinda Upland and Elphaba Thropp in the film, respectively. The rest of the cast includes Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero Tigelaar, Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard of Oz, Peter Dinklage as Doctor Dillamond, Bowen Yang as Pfannee, Keala Settle as Miss Coddle, Marissa Bode as Nessarose Thropp, Bronwyn James as ShenShen, Ethan Slater as Boq, and more.
