Tron: Ares Director Compares Jared Leto’s Villain to Pinocchio

Joachim Rønning, the director of the upcoming sci-fi feature Tron: Ares, has described Jared Leto’s titular villain in the movie as a “bit like Pinocchio” in a new interview. Tron: Ares is the third installment in the Tron movie series, following 1982’s Tron and 2010’s Tron: Legacy. Notably, Pinocchio is a popular fictional character that originated in Carlo Collodi’s 1883 children’s novel The Adventures of Pinocchio and has since appeared in multiple adaptations and iterations across various mediums. In the story, Pinocchio is a wooden marionette made by Geppetto, and one of his core traits is that he dreams of being a real boy.
Joachim Rønning says Jared Leto’s villain ‘wants to be a real boy’ in Tron: Ares
Rønning compared Leto’s Ares to Pinocchio during an interview with the Empire magazine. “Not to be too clichéd, but I always thought about him a bit like Pinocchio,” he explained, adding, “Ares wants to be a real boy.”
The official logline for the movie describes Ares as a “highly sophisticated Program” who has been “sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission,” resulting in a first encounter between humanity and “A.I. beings.”
According to Rønning, Ares’ unique origin gives him a one-of-a-kind perspective on humanity. He described the character as “almost being an infant, discovering the world for the first time” and shared that they “wanted the audience to see the world through his eyes.” He elaborated, “The little things that we take for granted, or don’t see anymore. That was important. And then a bigger theme for the film is what it takes — what it means — to be human. Especially in this case, because he’s a computer program.”
Besides Leto, Tron: Ares stars Greta Lee as Eve Kim and Evan Peters as Julian. The cast also includes Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Gillian Anderson. Further, Jeff Bridges is returning as Kevin Flynn. Tron: Ares premieres in U.S. theaters on October 10, 2025.
