Channing Tatum Teases Roofman, Calls It ‘Devastating, Emotional, and Somehow Hilarious’

Channing Tatum has been in many memorable films that have spanned various genres, like Magic Mike XXL, The Lost City, Blink Twice, and more. This is all the more reason why he’ll be an honoree at CinemaCon‘s Big Screen Achievement Awards. But before receiving his big award tonight, he introduced his new movie, Roofman, calling it “devastating, emotional, and somehow hilarious.”
Based on the true story of fugitive Jeffrey Manchester, Channing Tatum takes the lead of a McDonald’s thief known for cutting a hole through the roof to break in. Hence the nickname “Roofman.” After he escapes from prison, he tries to rebuild his life by hiding away at a Toys “R” Us and dating a single mother (Kirsten Dunst), only for his criminal past to catch up.
At this year’s CinemaCon, THR reported that Channing Tatum appeared during a presentation for the Paramount Pictures movie. At Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, he promoted his new film, Roofman, as “a really special movie” and the different emotions he felt about the crime-drama film:
“[Director Derek Cianfrance] crafted this movie that is an immensely entertaining ride, equal parts devastating, emotional and somehow hilarious.”
Other than Blue Valentine’s Derek Cianfrance directing Roofman, the upcoming movie’s screenwriter is Sound of Metal’s executive producer, Kirt Gunn. The screenplay was based on an earlier script by David Stephens and Peter Petrucci. Other talented cast members of the project include Uzo Aduba, Peter Dinklage, Juno Temple, and more.
What was in CinemaCon’s Footage of Roofman?
In CinemaCon’s footage of Roofman, we see Jeffrey Manchester dropping inside a fast food restaurant through the rooftop. The robber offers one of the team members a coat before forcing them all into a walk-in freezer.
The footage then shows Jeffrey with his family at his kid’s birthday party before the police drop in. While attempting to flee down the block, Jeffrey is arrested.
After a successful escape, Jeffrey hides away in a toy store’s ceiling and secret compartments. We see Jeffrey making good use of his freedom in the store with some Risky Business-style dancing and even busting out the birthday suit. That is, until he’s discovered by the store manager. Other scenes show Jeffrey falling in love with a female staff member only to risk capture once again.
You can see Channing Tatum in Roofman when it comes to theaters on October 3rd.
