The Entertainment System Is Down, a new dark satire starring Keanu Reeves, has begun filming. Principal photography is underway in Budapest. Filming is expected to last over 70 days through May 2025.

The black comedy is set on a flight between England and Australia. When the plane’s entertainment system breaks, the passengers are forced to contend with boredom. The movie will utilize a real Boeing 747 on the set.

Reeves has not appeared in a live-action film since 2023’s John Wick: Chapter 4. Reeves will reprise Wick in the upcoming spin-off film Ballerina, which opens in theaters on June 6, 2025. Reeves recently voiced the role of Shadow in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Who is in The Entertainment System Is Down cast?

Reeves headlines a star-studded cast that features Kirsten Dunst, Daniel Brühl, Nicholas Braun, Samantha Morton, and Tobias Menzies.

The rest of the ensemble includes Connor Swindells, Daniel Webber, Wayne Blair, Dan Wyllie, Lindsay Duncan, Allan Corduner, Sofia Tjelta Sydness, Erin Ainsworth, Myles Kamwendo, Sanna Sundqvist, Elle Piper, Tea Stjärne, and Swedish artist Benjamin Ingrosso.

Oscar nominee Ruben Östlund writes and directs The Entertainment System is Down. This marks Östlund’s second English-language movie, following 2022’s Triangle of Sadness, which won the Palme d’Or at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. Triangle of Sadness received three Academy Award nominations: Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay.

Östlund’s other films include The Square, Force Majeure, Play, Involuntary, and The Guitar Mongoloid.

The Entertainment System Is Down is produced by Plattform Produktion (Sweden), Essential Films (Germany), and Parisienne de Production (France). Co-producers are BBC Film, Film i Väst, Sveriges Television, ZDF/ARTE, ARTE France Cinéma, SF Studios, Eye Eye Pictures (Norway), and Paloma Productions (Denmark).

A24 won the U.S. rights to the film in an eight-figure deal at Cannes last year.
